BENGALURU: The second Private Freight Terminal (PFT) in South Western Railway (SWR) is likely to be completed by March-end.
At present, only one PFT at Malur is operational in the SWR jurisdiction.
An official said Adani Agri Logistics Limited had set up a PFT near Malur station in SWR’s Bengaluru division limits.
The second one is being established by the Distribution Logistics Infrastructure (DLI) Private Limited at Anekel and is expected to be commissioned by the end of March. DLI is planning an Integrated Logistics Park at Anekel, which is around 15km away from Electronics City.
"We have received seven PFT proposals so far. PFT of DLI is targeted for commissioning in March 2020. The dates of commissioning of other projects have not been fixed because of land acquisition and other issues," SWR's chief public relations officer E Vijaya told TOI.
Asked about the benefits of PFT, she said: “It enables rapid development of network of freight handling terminals with private sector participation. Further, it enhances the presence and share of railways in the overall transport chain. It will also divert traffic from road to rail and attain increased rail freight volumes by offering integrated efficient and cost-effective logistics and warehousing solutions to the users.”
"The railway board policy issued for setting up of PFTs is an open-ended policy. Interested, private parties need to approach railways for setting up of PFTs," said Vijaya
Abhishek R, a rail fan said: "PFTs help railways to generate additional revenue. Doubling of Byappanahalli-Hosur will help railways to operate additional passenger and freight trains.”
Railway officials said most PFTs in the country are established in huge land available near railway stations. These terminals are mostly built by private investors on private lands and railways will provide connectivity on a lease basis.
