A rare and vintage number plate has sold for $1.11million at a car auction.

The Shannons Melbourne Autumn Classic Auction was held on Monday with vintage cars, number plates and other automotive collectibles going up for sale.

The $1.11million sale of the heritage Victorian number plate was more than any other items on offer at the auction, including vintage cars.

The number plate - VIC 26 - had not changed hands for two decades and proved to be a very desirable item at Monday's auction, Nine News reported.  

The bidding price started at more than half a million dollars, $560,000, and quickly started to climb.

The Victorian number plate beat out a previous big seller, the NSW Heritage plate '22', which sold for $905,000 in November of 2019.
