A Sikh student was allegedly made to remove his turban before he was allowed to enter an examination centre in Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh on Monday.
Three teachers, including the centre supervisor and assistant supervisor, have been removed from duty after the Sikh community registered its protest over the incident that took place at a higher secondary girls’ school in Dhamnod.
The Sikh student reached the examination centre around 8.45 am to appear for his Hindi paper. To prevent cheating during the examination, those on examination duty were letting students in after ensuring that students were not carrying any material with them.
District education officer Manglesh Vyas told The Indian Express that the teachers were at fault and should have kept religious sentiments in mind. He admitted that teachers had been instructed to carry out intensive checks to prevent use of unfair means during the examination.
Nothing objectionable was found in the student’s turban, he said. Though no formal complaint has so far been lodged by the student, the Sikh community registered its protest when the student told his parents that he had been asked to remove his turban against his wishes.
Expressing his displeasure over the incident, Chief Minister Kamal Nath asked the Dhar district administration to carry out a probe and punish those found guilty.
