Punjab: Man gets 10-year term, fined Rs 26,000 for raping woman on pretext of marriage in Ropar

PATIALA: The court of additional district and session judge Ropar Surinderpal Kaur awarded 10-year rigorous imprisonment to a Ropar-based man in Punjab for abducting, raping and criminally intimidating a woman on the pretext of marriage.
The court also imposed a fine amounting Rs 26,000 to the accused identified as Vir Chandra of a village in Kiratpur Sahib of Ropar district. The case was registered under sections of rape and others under IPC at Nurpur Bedi police station of the district in May 2017 on the complaint of a 23-year-old woman who was working as a private employee and was living with her uncle and aunt.
In her complaint to the police, the rape survivor alleged that the accused gave her sedatives and raped her and also filmed her to further blackmail her. The accused continued to rape her on the promise of marriage but later refused to marry.
The court had imprisoned 10 years and Rs 20,000 fine under section 376 (rape), five years imprisonment and Rs 5000 fine under section 366 (abduction) and One-year imprisonment and Rs 1,000 fine under section 506 (criminal intimidation) to the accused.
