Haryana: CRPF constable among two arrested with 6.28kg opium in Kurukshetra

AMBALA/KURUKSHETRA: The Haryana police special task force (STF) of Ambala district on Tuesday arrested two accused including a Central Reserved Police Force (CRPF) constable, after recovering 6.28 kg opium worth around Rs 15 lakh from their possession under limits of Kurukshetra University (KU) police station (PS) in Kurukshetra district.
Ambala STF in-charge deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Kulbhushan on Tuesday evening held a press conference at his office in Ambala Cantonment and revealed the details about this case.
The arrested accused have been identified as Umeda Ram (35) of Bikaner district in Rajasthan, who was presently posted as a constable in Assam sand his accomplice Mukesh (32) of Neemuch district in Madhya Pradesh (MP), told the DSP.
“Accused Umeda has been working in the CRPF since the year 2006, and he remained posted in Neemuch, MP, where he came in contact with Mukesh and started smuggling opium to the region with him. These accused have been active from past around 4-5 years in smuggling opium in the region including Ambala, Chandigarh, and Kurukshetra”, said the DSP.
“On Tuesday, we received the tip-off that the accused and his accomplice would be coming to Kurukshetra via train along with the contraband in large quantity. Acting accordingly, we laid a trap and recovered around 6.28kg opium from their possession near Birla Temple Chowk in Kurukshetra”, added DSP Kulbhushan.
The officer added, “Accused Umeda smuggled opium with Mukesh mostly in trains and he misused his CRPF identity card during this crime. Mukesh also kept haircut like a jawan.”
On Tuesday, on the complaint of a police officer, a case against both accused Umeda and Mukesh under Section 18 (punishment for contravention in relation to opium poppy and opium) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered at KU PS.
“On Wednesday, both the accused would be presented in the court in Kurukshetra and we will seek their police remand for further investigation”, said the officer.
