No land, GIMS likely to miss out on MCI tag

Greater Noida: The Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) in Greater Noida, may not get MCI (Medical Council of India) recognition if it does not get land to build its own campus, the director has said.
The institute, currently operating from Gautam Buddha University (GBU) campus — taken on rent — had appealed to the state government seeking funds to get the land. A meeting that was held to discuss the matter did not yield results. Another meeting is likely to be held soon where the district magistrate and all stakeholders — GBU, the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA) and the district administration — will discuss the issue.
“I met the chief secretary, RK Tiwari, in Lucknow last week (on February 26) seeking funds for a dedicated campus for GIMS. But the meeting was inconclusive,” said Brigadier Dr RK Gupta, director, GIMS.
He added that if the institute does not get land to construct a hospital and a college campus soon, then it stands the risk of not getting MCI recognition. “For a medical institute, it is mandatory to have a hospital and college building — all on one campus on its own land — for an MCI recognition. Since we are operating from a rented campus, we may not get the MCI recognition,” said Gupta.
All the hospitals and medical colleges require MCI recognition. The statutory body not only establishes uniform standard of education in the country, it also grants recognition to medical qualifications and gives accreditation to medical schools.
Recently, a team from the MCI had visited GIMS for an annual inspection. “The team inspected the hospital and the medical college. The report is expected within a month,” said Gupta.
He added that the GNIDA was supposed to give land for the hospital and the college without cost. “But due to their debts, they now are asking for money — Rs 340 crore for 56 acres next to GBU campus. The amount is for both a college and a hospital. I went to Lucknow to meet the chief secretary and find a solution to the problem. Now, a committee will be formed that will look into the matter,” he said. GIMS has 300 beds and Gupta said the hospital treated 4.27 lakh patients last year.
