Hyderabad: 1,821 arrested for drunk driving in February

HYDERABAD: In its bid to prevent drunk driving in the city and ensuring road safety, the city traffic police arrested as many as 1,821 people in February for driving under the influence of alcohol and filed chargesheets against all of them. Subsequently, they were produced in the third and fourth metropolitan magistrate courts in Nampally.
Five persons were caught driving without licence and one person was arrested for speaking on mobile phone while driving.
The courts, which sentenced 204 accused to imprisonment, also cancelled the driving licenses of two persons for a period of six months. It also imposed a total fine of Rs 1.85 crore on the traffic violators.
All the accused were sent to Chanchalguda jail. They were also counselled at the Traffic Training Institute (TTI) in Goshamahal and Begumpet.
“The drive against drunken driving and other violations will continue for the safety of commuters. The violators who were convicted may also face difficulties in getting government jobs, passports and visa clearance as their names will now be on the list of offenders,” a statement released by the traffic department said.
The traffic police have also issued an advisory asking commuters to adhere to road rules and refrain from driving when they are under the influence of alcohol.
