CHANDIGARH: Around 10am on Monday, a leaking pipeline brought the dividing road of sectors 46 and 47 under a feet of water. Motorists had no relief till the afternoon.
Residents say the pipeline on the edge of the road must have burst when they were about to get off to work. The sight of a flooded road shocked them. Even the drains near the Sector 46 traffic lights were choked and the water had no outlet. A commuter from the sector said: "Blocked drain and wasted water continue to cause traffic problems."
Many two-wheeler and bicycles stalled in the water. Witness Prakash said: "Even car drivers were afraid to go through the water, for they couldn't see the potholes underneath. Motorcyclists and scooterists had to do some tight manoeuvring to keep to one side of the road and stay clear of the water. What they did was dangerous but they had no option."
Even a few local buses were stuck on this road. Cyclist Madhav said: "I take this route daily but now will have to avoid it." A scooterist said: "If I drive through so much of water with cars cruising by, I'll reach office with mud-splashed clothes."
An auto-rickshaw operator said: "My usual spot for picking up passengers is on the other side of the road. I had to park on the wrong side because my flank was flooded and passengers were all huddled opposite."
Confronted, municipal corporation chief engineer Shailender Singh said: "We moved a repair team to the spot as soon as we came to know about the leakage."
