With just 93 cadaver organ transplants, TN falls to third position in 2019.

As per data from the Union Health Ministry, 93 deceased organ transplants were performed in Tamil Nadu in 2019, much lesser than Maharashtra that performed 153 deceased organ donations. Telangana with 117 donations came second in India.
This is a drastic drop from 180 cadaver organ donations in 2016 – nearly double of the 2019 figure – show the deceased organ donation registry maintained by the Mohan Foundation. The fall was steady – 160 in 2017 and 137 in 2018.
Acknowledged the decline in the number of organ donations, Dr Sunil Shroff, transplant surgeon and the founder and managing trustee of Mohan Foundation, said more number of hospitals from Tamil Nadu need to come forward to take up organ donation. “The hospitals need to cooperate. Also, certain issues highlighting the lack of trust among the public in the system of organ donation have also led to the decline,” he opined.
As per the data from the Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu (TRANSTAN), the total number of organ donations in 2019 have also declined, with only about 768 organ donations in the State. There were 1,065 organ donations in 2016, which came down to 943 in 2017, and declined further to 924 in 2018.
In 2019, there were about 107 organ transplants that were performed in the government sector while about 661 organ donations were performed at private hospitals, including six of them for international patients.
In 2019, the total number of donors have also dropped to 127 organ donors, from 137 in 2018. The numbers in 2016 and 2017 were 185 and 160 respectively. Out of the total donors in 2019, 105 were private donors and 22 government donors.
According to TRANSTAN figures, 8,094 organ transplants have been performed since the authority was formed in 2008. Kidney transplants formed the highest number (2,463), followed by corneal transplants (2,070) and liver transplants (1,270). Till date, 1,370 organ donors have been registered in Tamil Nadu. Currently, there are 6,091 patients who are in the waitlist.
When asked about the decline, senior officials from the TRANSTAN said that the State was taking measures to ensure that more number of organ donations are undertaken in Tamil Nadu.
