VW Tiguan Crossover Coupe Apparently Spied In China

Volkswagen wants to democratize crossover coupes and it appears they’re working on a sleeker version of the Tiguan.

Photos posted by Autohome show a heavily disguised model that is reportedly based on the facelifted Tiguan which will be introduced later this year.

While the front end appears to largely carryover, bigger changes occur further back. Most notably, there’s a rakish windscreen which flows into a steeply sloping roof. The model also adopts a sportier greenhouse that echoes the one used on the BMW X4 and Mercedes GLC Coupe. As part of this change, there’s an upward sweeping beltline and smaller side windows.

Of course, the biggest changes are at the rear and the so-called Tiguan X adopts an all-new tailgate with an angular rear window. We can also see wraparound taillights and what appears to be an integrated rear spoiler.

According to the publication, the crossover coupe is based on the Tiguan Allspace which is known as the Tiguan L in China. Engine options should carryover from the standard model and it’s possible the crossover will be offered in a variety of markets.

While a lot of details remain unknown, the facelifted Tiguan is expected to share an assortment of engines will with all-new Golf Mk8. That means choices could include 1.5-liter TSIs and 2.0-liter TDIs.

Whether or not those engines will be offered in the Tiguan X remains to be seen, but hopefully the model will get an R variant. Volkswagen has been testing a Tiguan R for awhile and it’s expected to have a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that develops at least 296 hp (221 kW / 300 PS).
