HYDERABAD: Bhadradri-Kothagudem police arrested five
Maoist party couriers while they were transporting explosives stolen from stone crushing units to Maoist cadres on Saturday.
Police suspect that Maoists are planning to use the stolen explosives to target police by setting up landmines.
At around 11 am on Saturday, during a vehicle check in Jagannadhapuram village of Paloncha mandal, Paloncha (Rural) SI K Sridhar and his team spotted six persons travelling on two bikes and a Tata Magic vehicle. Upon seeing the police, one of the suspects fled the spot.
The police managed to arrest the other five persons, including P Saraiah (45), resident of Nimmalagudem in Kistaram mandal of Sukma district, Chhattisgarh, K Murali (24), K Nageswara Rao (40) of Dabbanootala village in Dummugudem mandal, K Sammaiah (26), Veerabhadrapuram village in Dummugudem mandal and J Hanumanthu (28) of Toggudem in Paloncha mandal.

detonators and 27 explosive boosters from the possession of the accused. “During interrogation, the accused confessed that as per the request of Maoist party state leadership, they have been working as couriers for Maoist party. The accused procured the explosive materials from different stone crushing mills near Toggudem village to supply them to Maoists as per the directions of the state level leadership including Haribhushan, Damodar, Lachanna, Azad and Ravi,” additional SP Ramana Reddy said.
Based on the information provided by the accused, special teams of Bhadradri-Kothagudem district police conducted surprise checks at Sri Vengamamba quarry in Jagannathapuram, Bhavani crusher mill and VSI crusher mill in Toggudem, TCMM crusher in Juluripadu, Sai Ganesh metal and crusher in Chunchupalli and KRK crusher mill in Kothagudem.
During the checks, police seized 2,170 gelatine sticks, 1,428 detonators, 2,632 explosive boosters and bundles of detonating wire. “Cases were booked against the owners and managers of stone crushing mills for violation of rules and a few of them were arrested,” the additional SP said.
Recently, Kothagudem SP Sunil Dutt said that they have stepped up surveillance on Maoist party couriers and people resorting to illegal sale of explosives.
