An arsonist doused three police cars in petrol and set them alight in a brazen late-night attack.

Three vehicles outside Western Australia's Fremantle Police Station went up in flames at about 11pm on Sunday night.

The cars were parked on Leake Street at the back of the station.

Tourist Lyn Dade told 9News she saw huge flames exploding out of the cars from her balcony across the road.

'We've been saying for three weeks how quiet it is down here, you couldn't be safer at the back of a police station and then suddenly this,' she said.

The cars were completely destroyed in the attack, with police appealing to the public to help find a man they believe can assist with inquires.

He was spotted at a nearby petrol station earlier in the evening and again at the scene with a jerry can.

'If that person is watching this now, I would encourage that person to surrender to police because we will find you. It's only a matter of time,' Commander Greg Knott said.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police.

The station is now down three cars but police say their operations won't be affected.

Commander Knott said he was unaware of the motive behind the attack and that taxpayers will cop the bill.

'This is hard taxpayers money that pays for these items, so an attack on our premises is an attack on all West Australians,' he said.
