GAYA: Governor-cum-chancellor
Phagu Chauhan on Sunday exhorted the teachers and students of Magadh University to realize PM Narendra Modi’s ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshta Bharat’ vision. He was speaking at the function held in MU auditorium on the 59th foundation day of the university.
The foundation for the university’s establishment was laid by the then Vice-President Sarwapalli Radhakrishnan on March 1,1962. Later the same year, Radhakrishnan took over as the country’s second President.
The governor said transmission of book knowledge was not the final aim of education. “Character building of the students was no less important, for which a concerted effort was needed. Peace and harmony were sine qua non for the country’s development and it is our national duty to make India develop and prosper,” he said.
Dwelling on the challenges facing higher education in the state, the governor said full implementation of the academic calendar, including timely admission, transparent registration, sincere classroom practices, fair exams and evaluation and result publication were the important ingredients of academic calendar.
The governor hoped that the universities in the state will ensure that distinct improvement is recorded in state’s higher education system to make it compare favourably with the other national and international institutions.
In his welcome speech, Magadh University VC Prof Rajendra Prasad regretted the shortage of teachers. He said despite recent recruitments, the shortage of teachers persists and there was need for appointment of guest teachers.
The VC informed the governor that vocational education in 45 different subjects was being imparted in the university under the self-finance mode. He also said PG diploma courses in defence management and disaster management would be introduced in the university. It has been his endeavour to cultivate a science based value system in the university and give shape to innovation in the field of education. He also said that the academic sessions would fully be regularized in the next few months.
The VC said the proposed exchange programmes with educational institutions of China has hit a roadblock on account of spread of coronavirus.
Speaking on the occasion, MU alumni and state agriculture minister Prem Kumar said resource crunch would not be allowed to come in the way of the university’s development programmes.
Other dignitaries present on the occasion included additional chief secretary-cum-secretary to the governor Brajesh Mehrotra and MU syndicate member Anil Swami. Registrar professor S P Deen proposed the vote of thanks.
