Rajkot: “Judicial officers should exercise their power to give justice. If they fail to use this power,
then they too are party to the injustice, as people come to the courts with their trust in us,” said Supreme Court judge,
justice M R Shah, while asking judicial members and advocates to strive towards maintaining people’s trust in the justice delivery system.
“Whatever you do, do with commitment, trust, honesty and integrity,” he said while speaking at the ground breaking ceremony of the new court building in Rajkot on Sunday.
Indicating at the recent Delhi’s riots without naming it, Justice Shah reminded the judicial officers of their huge role in the delivery system and said: “You have seen in our country how things panned out when people took law into their own hands. When people’s trust in judiciary or justice delivery system gets shaken they become impatient. We need to think that why this has happened because people come to the court like they do to temples and we have to work in a way that their faith on justice is not shaken.”
Asking advocates not to go on strikes, he said, “Strike is actually injustice to the public at large. If you have any grievances, then work an extra hour to showcase your anger.” Justice Shah was a member of a bench that recently delivered the judgement holding SC advocates’ strike illegal.
Justice Shah also asked advocates to take the maximum benefits of mediation and alternate dispute resolution system. He also apprised the infrastructure created by state government in various court buildings. “Whatever power and position you got and what trust people has put in you and system, work in a way that that trust stays strong. Justice delivery system sustains only when the people’s trust in justice sustain,” he added.
Chief justice of Gujarat high court Vikram Nath said, “It’s almost six months in Gujarat now and I am finding the government’s cooperation and work culture very good. The judicial system gets tremendous support from the state government to run the judiciary of the entire state.”
The new court building will come in 14 acre land in Ghanteshwar area near FCI warehouse at a cost of Rs 118 crore. Work is expected to end in next two years.
