Haveri: The supply of contaminated water to houses in parts of
Haveri city for the past few days has rightly raised the hackles of the residents. The problem has been attributed to mixing of
sewage water with potable water.
Highlighting the health hazards that consumption of contaminated water exposed one to, president of the Haveri Nagarika Vedike MS Korishettar said, “The
drinking water supplied throughout the day has a foul smell. Leave alone drinking, this cannot even be used for other domestic purposes. Those drinking this water are falling sick.”
Korishettar said that, despite residents bringing the problem to the attention of the Haveri City Municipal Council (CMC) authorities, the officials concerned have not initiated any action. “I have written to the deputy commissioner Krishna Bajpai alerting them to the problem. If the authorities fail to solve this problem, we will protest in front of the CMC,” he added.
Supriya Tippanna, a homemaker in Basaveshwar Nagar, complained of clothes smelling bad after being washed with water supplied by CMC. “This has been happening for a week. Initially, I did not what was causing this problem. But it was only when my neighbours told me they were facing the same problem that I understood the cause,” Supriya said.
Worse still, sewage from the drains is flowing into the Akkamahadevi Pond for the past few days. “The CMC’s water pipeline has sustained damage in many sections. The worrying thing is that water leaking from the sewage pipes is flowing into the pipes that supply drinking water,” said Nadish Mallanagoudar, a resident of Siddarodha Colony.
Haveri DC Krishna Bajpai, however, said that he was yet to receive a formal complaint about the problem. “But we will look into this issue, which is serious, and the authorities concerned will be directed to solve it at the earliest,” Bajpai said.
