DHARWAD: More than three years after BJP worker Yogeeshgouda Goudar was hacked to death at his gym here, CBI on Sunday arrested six men in Bengaluru who were allegedly hired to kill Goudar.
CBI made the arrest 10 days after the Supreme Court allowed the central probe agency to take over probe into the case. The CBI has intensified probe, interrogating several persons in Dharwad visiting other places since February 20. Investigations were earlier carried out by jurisdictional police and the Criminal Investigation Department .
The arrested are Dinesh, Sunil, Nutan, Ashwath, Shahnawaz and Nazeer Ahmed. CBI nabbed the hired guns while they were allegedly trying to escape to Tamil Nadu.
A member of Dharwad zilla panchayat, Goudar, 26, was murdered on June 15, 2016 at his gym in Saptapur of Dharwad after miscreants threw chilli powder in his face. Hubballi-Dharwad police had arrested Basavaraj Mutagi and others on charges of murdering Goudar. CID, which took over the case, also named as accused those who were arrested by Hubballi-Dharwad cops. CBI sleuths said Mutagi allegedly hired a gang to kill Goudar.
Goudar's elder brother Gurunathgouda, not happy with the CID probe, had urged the Congress-JD(S) government to hand it over to CBI. But the government turned down the request. After BJP came to power, the government recommended the case be vested with CBI.
