Key to nailing history lies in the textbook

Jayati Chakraborty, teacher at CPS Wardhaman Nagar
As the history syllabus is vast, the major challenge for a student is to complete the portion on time. Students therefore get tempted to study from guidebooks and not refer to the textbooks at all. I would advise students not to commit this blunder.
As per the new pattern, the question paper comprises of 20 objective type questions which need a thorough reading of the textbook. Chapters on kinship, caste and class, Harappan civilization, colonial cities, partition and Mahatma Gandhi and the national movement should be studied thoroughly for this section. While going through the chapters, the student should also study the pictures especially in Book 1 and Book 2.
The picture illustrations of thinker, beliefs and buildings, Vijaynagar empire, colonial city, Bhakti-Sufi traditions are very important for picture based MCQ. Moreover the meanings of certain ancient and medieval terms like ‘Milkiyat’, ‘Daftar’, ‘Mleccha’, ‘Rakshasa’, etc also need to be learnt for this section to score full marks.
The source based questions will test the comprehension skills of the student. So use the reading time to read the paragraphs carefully and read all the questions pertaining to the paragraph before writing the answers. Try to search the answers from the paragraph. Sometimes you might not find the answer in the paragraph. In such cases, you need to recollect the content of the chapter from where the source has been taken.
Every student should be able to score well in the map based questions as the they already know the places that they are expected to locate and identify. For 3 mark and 8 mark questions, I would advise you to jot down the points while learning the answers instead of memorizing word to word which is often the tendency among students.
Jotting down the key points will not only give you clarity but will also help you to remember during the exam. Try to adhere to the word limit and attempt all questions without fail.
Finally, it is necessary to remain calm. Your mind works better when you are calm. All the best!
