Lucknow: Verdict brings justice after 7 years, but Sahu kin want Aquil hanged

LUCKNOW: Smiles returned and sweets were distributed at the Sahu household in Saadatganj after a local court sentenced their son’s killer to life term, ending seven years of fear and trauma. In 2013, don Aquil Ansari murdered Ayush and after four years eliminated his father, Shravan.
“We are satisfied with the court verdict in Ayush’s case, but justice will be delivered when the accused gets capital punishment in my father’s murder. The trial is still underway,” Suneet Sahu, elder brother of Ayush, told TOI on Saturday, while narrating the family’s ordeal. On October 16, 2013, Aquil and his aide, Azim alias Babu, peppered Ayush with bullets over a brawl on purchase of beer and on February 1, 2017, Shravan, an edible oil trader, was killed by the don’s henchmen.
“Our world changed dramatically in October, 2013, when the bullet-ridden body of Ayush was brought home. But, Aquil’s criminal background and political connection could not deter my father. After performing the last rites, he walked into Thakurganj police station and lodged an FIR against Aquil,” said Suneet.
“Then too, a crowd led by a MLA gathered at the police station to oppose the FIR, but my father was unfazed. When cops delayed filing the chargesheet, he collected evidence and handed them over to investigation officer. Finally, trial began after three years, but the accused changed lawyers and sought more time. Imagine, it took 10 hearings over a year to record the statement of one eye-witness,” Suneet recalled.
“I had to take care of the family, pursue two cases despite threats and funds constraint. The court took suo moto cognizance of our plight and ordered a CBI probe into my father’s murder. CBI has filed a chargesheet and the trial is underway,” he said.
