10 days after reopening, tanneries closed again

Tanneries will reopen as soon as the damaged line is repaired
Kanpur: In yet another setback to Kanpur’s leather industry, all tanneries of Jajmau area were once again closed for an indefinite period on Friday.
This time, however, the tanneries were not at fault and the closure was ordered following a damage to common header of the line which carries treated water from common effluent treatment plant (CETP) and sewage treatment plant (STP) to irrigation channel.
Common header of the line is the point from where treated water from tanneries and STP is forwarded for irrigation purposes.
The agency concerned has started repair work and district administration has been informed about it.
District magistrate Brahmadev Ram Tiwari ordered closure of all tanneries with immediate effect which was implemented by Regional Pollution Control Board (RPCB).
The tanneries will reopen as soon as the damaged line is repaired. According to Jal Nigam sources, work on deep sewer line project was on at Pyondi village in Jajmau area for last two weeks.
On Friday, a common header line was damaged when an earth-mover was carrying out work. Jal Nigam officials closed the channel carrying water from treatment plant and started repair work.
As part of alternate arrangement, water coming from treatment plant has been diverted towards Airforce nullah from when it is getting into the Ganga.
Subsequently, it was decided to close the tanneries till further order and repair work on the damaged line was carried out.
Talking to TOI, RPCB officer Dr SB Franklin said he came to know about the incident around Friday noon when he received a photograph on his mobile phone. Later, the district magistrate informed him about the incident. “Tanneries have been closed as a precautionary measure so that effluent does not find its way into the river,” he said.
Executive engineer (zone -2) of municipal corporation SK Singh said, “The channel was damaged during digging work by Jal Nigam. The flow of channel has been diverted and repair work has commenced.”
The State Pollution Control Board had, on February 19, ordered opening of all 256 tanneries after the closure of over three months.
After working for 10 days, the tanneries had to be closed again. Tannery owners have assured the district administration and Regional Pollution Control Board that they would not go in for wet tanning till repair work of channel is complete.
