Ahmedabad: Senior citizen loses Rs 45,000 to cyber thieves

AHMEDABAD: A 64-year-old man Jayanti Panchal of Shahibaugh has lodged a complaint with cyber cell of the city police that, a total of Rs 45,000 was siphoned off from his credit card of private bank in two transactions after he gave his 16-digit credit card number, pass word and One Time Password (OTP) to a woman who called her up identifying herself as an executive of a private bank.
Interestingly, the incident happened about 3 years ago in February 2017. Panchal roamed about from office to office submitting applications regarding the fraud which had happened with him and at the end, after three years cyber cell registered his complaint.
According to the FIR, on the morning of February 7, 2020 he got a call from a woman who identified herself Anita Singh -an executive of private bank. “She told Panchal that his credit card is about to expire and to transfer his bonus points to the new card she would need his card number and other details. The new card will then be sent to his residence by post” said an investigator.
Cyber Cell officials said after some time another woman who identified herself as Radhika Patel took the card number, Panchal’s password and asked him to give the OTP which he will receive on his mobile in short while.
“Did according what he was told by the so called Radhik Patel and within minutes Rs 30,000 and Rs 15,000 were debited from his credit card to two digital wallets. Panchal went to the bank’s branch in Shahibaugh and blocked his card. We have registered his complaint and based on the phone numbers from which Panchal was called and the two accounts of digital wallet, we will get to the accused” said a cyber cell official.
