JALANDHAR:
Canada's New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh has accused PM Narendra Modi and BJP of allowing "anti-Muslim mobs to flame the fire of hate" and division with impunity in New Delhi.
Citing a Canadian news report on threats to a Punjabi origin journalist working in Delhi independently, he urged Canadian Prime Minster Justin Trudeau to denounce the situation.
"Hate unchallenged spreads like wildfire. PM Modi and BJP have allowed anti-Muslim mobs to flame the fire of hate and division with impunity. This week, 27 lives were taken in New Delhi and Canadian journalists have been threatened. PM Trudeau must denounce the situation," Jagmeet tweeted. Twitterati asked him to update the toll to 42.
The journalist he mentioned is
Gurpreet Singh, co-founder of 'Radical Desi' magazine and 'Indians Abroad for Pluralist India' (IAPI). IAPI was formed in
Surrey, BC, Canada in July 2017, in response to "growing attacks on religious minorities" in India.
Narrating the February 25 incident in a Facebook post, Gurpreet wrote, "Last night I was threatened by a Modi supporter after an event at UBC. I was invited to speak on
CAA... Matter will be taken up with police by organisers, but I just want to caution everyone about growing threat of Hindutva extremists in Canada."
Earlier, Gurpreet's wife and NDP MPP Rachna Singh was criticized by Canada-based Vedic Hindu Cultural Society in March last year after she "expressed concerns on warmongering" in Indo-Canadian community. The Society had accused of her pursuing ultra-Leftist agenda and had sought apology from her.
