Surat: Cop caught taking Rs 50 thousand bribe

SURAT: A police constable of Umra police station was caught red-handed by sleuths of anti-corruption bureau (ACB) while accepting a bribe of Rs50,000 here on Saturday. The accused had demanded Rs3 lakh from the owner of an electronics showroom, who wanted to lodge a complaint of theft of Rs25 lakh against one of his employees. ACB sleuths arrested constable Shailesh Gagiya, who is posted at Piplod police chowky, when he went to accept the bribe money near Surat City Gymkhana at Piplod. The trap was laid by police inspector V A Desai under the supervision of ACB assistant director N P Gohil.
The accused who worked as writer of J G Parmar, police sub-inspector of Piplod chowky, assisted his seniors in preparing and arranging case documents and to register detailed statements of concerned people.
The complainant had submitted an application at Umra police station alleging theft of Rs25 lakh by his manager. The accused demanded Rs5 lakh from the complainant to register the offence, but then settled for Rs3 lakh.
