Ambala: Man throws acid on pregnant wife, held

AMBALA: The Ambala police on Saturday arrested a man, who had reportedly attacked his four-month pregnant wife with acid on Friday evening.
The victim had suffered around 40% burn injuries in the attack that took place in Alawalpur village of Ambala district. "The accused was arrested on Saturday evening. He has been identified as Anil of Ravidas Pura in Karnal. He will be presented before the duty magistrate on Sunday,' Ambala superintendent of police (SP) Abhishek Jorwal said.
The woman was out for an evening walk along with her brother's wife when she was allegedly attacked with acid by her husband, Jorwal added.
As per sources, the woman had come to her parents' house in Alawalpur village from Karnal and on Friday evening; she was out for an evening stroll with her sister-in-law when a motorcycle-borne man attacked them with acid, resulting in injuries to both of them. Sources added that the main target was the pregnant woman.
"We received information about an acid attack on two women in Alawalpur village from the MMU Hospital in Mullana. After the attack, both women were rushed to the hospital by their family members and villagers. A case has been registered on the complaint of the victim's sister-in-law against the accused under Section 326-A (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by use of acid) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and further investigation is being done," said Barara police station house officer (SHO) inspector Hamir Singh.
"The pregnant woman has received around 40% burn injuries on her face and stomach. She has been kept on ventilator and the next 72 hours are critical for her. Her sister-in-law has suffered 18-20% burns in the attack. Both of them are undergoing treatment at MMU Hospital in Mullana," said Jorwal.
He added, "It was the husband of the pregnant woman who attacked her with acid. As she was accompanied by her sister-in-law, some acid splashed on her as well. We have rounded the accused up and further investigation is being done. So far, the exact reason behind this crime is yet to be ascertained."
