Celebrate your love of reading all during the month of March. In honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday, March is designated as National Reading Month, a month to encourage readers of all ages to read every day. The celebration begins with Dr. Seuss’s birthday on Monday, March 2. Join us for a special story hour and craft at 10:30 a.m. The "Flowers and Showers Story Hour" session begins Monday, March 9 at 10:30 a.m. for children ages 2 ½ to 5. The six-week "Flowers and Showers" themed program ends on the week of April 13.

March is also the time of the great Iditarod Race. The Iditarod is a very tough and exciting Alaskan sled dog race run from Anchorage to Nome, and all those who enter do it for the challenge. The Swansea Free Public Library is following the 48th Annual Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race this year. This challenging race of over 900 miles can take from 9 to 14 days to complete. We are holding a similar challenge in reading, called the Iditaread Challenge! Readers will sign up and have their name posted at the library. They will attempt to read a book for every checkpoint. Readers will keep track of their reading on an Iditaread Challenge Reading Log. Our reading challenge will continue until Friday, April 10 Read 25 books to mark each of the checkpoints. Pick up entree form and log at the library. Great for ages up to 14. All participants who complete the challenge will receive a collectible Iditaread dog tag.

The Swansea Free Public Library has teamed up with the Boston Bruins to participate in 13th annual PJ Drive to benefit Cradles to Crayons and DCF Wonderfund, two non-profits that ensure positive living conditions for children. Fans are encourage to help by donating PJ’s at the Swansea Free Public Library. Please note that all donated PJs must be new and can be dropped off during normal library hours. The PJ Drive provides pajamas to babies, children, and teens in communities across Massachusetts. It was started by former Bruin P.J. Axelsson and his wife Siw during the 2007-2008 season as a way to give back to the community. Since then, over 100,000 Massachusetts children have received PJ's through the Bruins PJ drive. The Bruins PJ Drive runs through March 15.

Youth Programs

The Pokemon Club meets the second Saturday of each month (unless otherwise noted) from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Join Pokemon fans for a morning of card trading, card playing, and Pokemon Bingo. Win Pokemon cards and candy treats. It's fun for fans of all ages. The next gathering is Saturday, March 14.

Calling all Monster Fans. It's the monthly Monster Squad Club! Each month, the Monster Squad investigates and learns about a different monster. Snacks and crafts are included. Open to all monster fans ages 6-12. Monster Squad meets on the second Saturday of each month (unless otherwise noted) from 1-3 p.m. The next Monster Mingle is Saturday, March 14.

Drop-in Chess for kids- Young chess players of any level are welcome to play chess the first and third Wednesdays of each month from 4-5 p.m. The next meeting is March 4. Chess sets and pieces will be provided by the library.

Every Tuesday Homeschoolers meet from 2-4 p.m. in the Junior Room. Everyone is welcome to Math Games and Art, Geography Club and the 4H STE(A)M program. Check the library calendar for more information.

Tween Book Club/Write Club takes place the 1st and 2nd Tuesdays of each month from 4-5 p.m . Tween Book Club/Write Club is for readers aged 8-12. Discuss great books, write stories, share ideas. Activities and snacks provided.

STEM/STEAM Book Club takes place the 3rd and 4th Tuesday of the month from 4-5 p.m. Each month we will read one fiction book, and an optional non-fiction book along with a picture book for younger children.

Adult Programs

The Swansea Free Public Library is pleased to invite the public to an enriching program with artist Sarah Jane Lapp. Spend an afternoon in Swansea Village at Christ Church hall on Saturday, March 7 from 1 to 3 p.m. for puzzles and pie. Sarah will lead participants through a series of puzzle making and community building exercises, all while eating pie. Join us for this free program which will foster a communal connection, conversation, cooperation and mindfulness, with friendship, fun and food.

Join Bonnie on Wednesday March, 4 from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. as she teaches us the simple and lovely craft of card making. All supplies provided. Make a lovely card for that someone special. Learn different techniques to make cards that will delight. Sign up is not necessary for this drop in program.

Quilting 101 - Join us for the beginning quilting series with expert quilter Diane Preble. This ongoing series takes place the 1st and 3rd Fridays of each month from 12:30-2:30 p.m. Start a new project or bring in one you are working on. Class size is limited so please sign-up at the circulation desk. The quilters will be meeting on Friday, March 6.

Looking for a new hobby and something to do on a Monday night? The library welcomes all adult game players for an evening of fun and friendship. Enjoy a relaxing evening in the Reference Room playing board games such as Ticket To Ride, Azul, Settlers of Catan and more. Bring a game to share or play one from the library collection. If you are new to Tabletop Board Games we have people who will teach how to play. The group meets the first Monday of each month from 6-8 p.m.

The library offers patrons many opportunities to explore different hobbies and we provide a different event each day. Coloring Club takes place each Monday, The Tuesday Club Genealogy group happens each Tuesday, Crafts are on Wednesday, Knitting Club takes place on Thursday, Simply Done Recipe and Coupon Club is also on Thursday and Quilting on Fridays along with other special programs during the week.

A great way to start each week is with Coloring for Adults. This stress reducing, calming activity is a great way to relax and find your inner artist. Coloring pages, pens and pencils are provided or you can bring your own. Adults of all ages are invited to the free program. Coloring club takes place every Monday from 12-2 p.m.

Tuesday Club -  Learn how to research your roots. Join the Tuesday Club every Tuesday from 12-2 p.m. in the Reference Room at the SFPL. Whether brand new or an experienced family history detective, we can help you as you undertake a journey of a lifetime. Utilize the library resources. Help is available. There is no fee or registration. This program is open to all. Family History is alive at the Swansea Public Library.

The 2nd and 4th Wednesdays are Crafternoons at the library from 12-2 p.m. Bring a project you are working on and share with others. Rug hooking, needlepoint, scrapbooking, no sew blankets, or any craft can be done at the library in the Reference Room. Join us for a delightful afternoon of Zen crafting.

The Swansea Knitters with Sue Carpenter meet each Thursday from 12-2 p.m. for fun, friendship and laughter while working on knitting projects. Whether you are brand new or an experienced knitter, our group is open to anyone at any level. People are here to help. Bring your needles and yarn and pull up a chair.

Simply Done, the Swansea Recipe/Coupon club is looking for new members. Meetings are held each Thursday in the Reference Room from 2-3:30 p.m. Members will swap recipes, cut coupons, find ways to save money, share cookbooks and cooking ideas, talk about food and bring in samples.

The program consists of stories on a different theme each week, songs, rhythm instruments, finger-plays, poetry and a simple take-home craft project. Registration is necessary for this program. A Time for Tots Program for little children ages 2-3 who love books will run on Wednesdays, through April 29 from 10 - 11 a.m. The program consists of songs, finger-plays, a brief story, puppets, rhythm instruments, and nursery rhymes. This program is suitable for a caregiver and child to participate together. Following the story period, toys are provided for children to stay and play! Registration is necessary for this program.
