Mysuru: More than 7,000 industrialists and entrepreneurs have left the country due to a deficit of trust and incidents like the violence that rocked east Delhi will only affect the economy further, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, founder of Art of Living Foundation, said on Friday.
Ravi Shankar was speaking at a corporate wellness conference on the theme ‘Wellness and Wellbeing for a Progressive Nation’ hosted by CII, in Mysuru. He said an atmosphere of fear and mistrust pervades the country and is does not augur well for the economy.
“Bankers too are suspicious of everyone and are not extending loans to industrialists. This has posed lots of problem,” Ravi Shankar said. “This attitude among bank officials should go, as life depends on trust. When there is a deficiency of trust there is possibility of the economy slowing down.”
He said society is now faced with two important issues — aggression and depression. “Some people stage protests and pelt stones which happened recently in Delhi. This is really unfortunate,” he said. “Fear lurks in the nation’s capital, which is being used by many to create terror. This will affect economy. No country will prosper without peace.”
Wellness is the need of the hour, he said. “Corporates used to spend half their health to gain wealth and spend half their wealth to regain their health. This isn’t good economics,” he said. “We have to talk and convince people to invest in wellness. I am glad times have changed. CII has taken this big initiative and corporate wellness is buzz word around the world today.”
He went on to say, “The US has invested $27 million in the wellness industry. In universities in America, 52 have [a course on] Indology. In India, 40 years ago, yoga was not taken as profession, but today many are taking Ayurveda and yoga seriously. This is leading to wellness.”
Dr Upendra Shenoy, chief, medical services, Columbia Asia Hospital, said, “Coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death in India and it is on rise. More than 50% of people who suffer heart attack are smokers.”
He advised people not to jog or run on the steps of Chamundi Hill as the uneven steps could result in injuries. Instead, he advised the audience to walk briskly on flat surfaces for at least 30 minutes. He also urged people to sleep eight hours a day.
