KOLKATA: A widow and her son tried to commit suicide on Wednesday. They had been reportedly suffering from financial distress.
The mother-son duo rescued by cops are now undergoing treatment at a city hospital. The woman, Susmita Dasgupta (51), lives at Uttaran Apartment in Panchasayar with her son, Ayan (30).
Ayan was unemployed. Her husband, a state government employee died six years ago. She had to take huge loans to make ends meet.
Neighbours on Wednesday noticed that they had not opened the door of their apartment since morning. Sensing trouble, they informed the police.
When cops knocked on the door, Ayan opened it. He looked drowsy. Police went in and found Susmita lying on the bed unconscious. Cops said each of them had consumed 30 sleeping pills mixed with rat kill poison.
