MOHALI: Aiming to test emergency preparedness to deal with any eventual case of COVID-19 (previously known as 2019
novel coronavirus), the Mohali district health department on Thursday conducted a mock drill at the district hospital in Phase VI.
A hospital employee posing as a coronavirus patient was picked from a nearby house and taken to the hospital in an ambulance. He was rushed to the hospital emergency where medicine specialist Dr Bhushan Kumar examined him and ENT specialist Dr Sandeep Kumar took his blood sample. Earlier, nurses and other staff members were sensitized about using personal protection equipment (PPE) kit and about how to deal with such a situation.
Unaware that it was a mock drill, panic gripped the area as residents assumed that there was a positive case of coronavirus in the area. They were later informed that it was a mock drill.
Civil surgeon Dr Manjit Singh and nodal officer Dr Harmandeep Kaur monitored the entire exercise. Dr Manjit Singh said the drill was aimed at training medical cadres to effectively face any eventual coronavirus case in the district. "If the employees and stakeholders concerned are trained, then the response during emergency would be smooth and effective."
He added that through the drill, emergency preparedness plan of the organization and standard operating procedure was evaluated so that persons concerned would deliver their duties effectively.
"The results from the exercise are used to improve plans, identify equipment shortcomings and point to training needs," Dr Manjit Singh said, adding thar no case of coronavirus infection had been reported in the state so far, however, there was a need to be alert and sensitized about the symptoms, testing and treatment of the disease. Three isolation wards for coronavirus at Mohali district hospital and sub-divisional hospitals at Kharar and Derabassi are already in place.
