SURAT: The Diamond city know for its vibrant lifestyle and exuberant night life has a reason to be worried.
A study by the environment cell of the civil engineering department of Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT) has found that
noise levels in the city were significantly higher than than the norms prescribed by the Central
Pollution Control Board (CPCB). What is more alarming is that noise levels during night time were also quiet high compared to the required limit.
The noise mapping study was conducted by Dr B N Tandel, assistant professor, environment cell at SVNIT and his PhD student
Dipesh Sonaviya at five location in the west zone of the city. The aim was to study the propagation of urban road traffic noise in the areas along with field measurements. “Vehicular sound is major source of
noise pollution in urban areas and therefore many countries have noise emission limits for vehicles. They also have legislations to regulate traffic noise,” Tandel told TOI. “We also need to realise the consequences of high noise pollution on human health.”
“The study findings should worry us all. It indicates that the noise levels are significantly higher even during night time and it could have serious health implications on residents,” he added.
Of the total seven zones in Surat, the researchers selected west zone for noise mapping because it includes diversified activities like vehicles, residences, commercial establishments and corporate offices. Three road stretches of 1 km each, forming a triangle, were selected for collecting noise level data. In all five locations were monitored for noise levels.
“We have ignored the ill effects of noise pollution in the study. This is a progressive problem and therefore people do not realise it as a serious issue. But it can affect work productivity as well as sleep pattern. More studies need to be conducted with the help of medical fraternity about effects of noise pollution on humans physiology and psychology,” Tandel added.
