GUWAHATI: All Assam Students' Union (Aasu) will intensify their agitation against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (
CAA) once the Class X and XII board exams are over in mid-March. This was decided during a central executive meeting of Aasu held in its headquarters at the
Gauhati University (GU) on Thursday.
Though it was widely anticipated that plans on floating an alternate political party to take on the
BJP in the 2021 assembly polls will take shape in the meeting, Aasu insiders told TOI that that the issue did not get much importance in the meeting. Now all eyes are on the delegate meeting of the students' body that is scheduled to be held in the city on Friday.
"Without taking the view of the Aasu delegates from all over the state, it's difficult to reach a conclusion on floating a political party out of the anti-CAA movement. The demands of the people of various parts of the state will be raised by the Aasu delegates. The top brass of the party will first listen to them and in the next central executive meeting of Aasu, they may deliberate on the issue of floating the new political party," said an Aasu insider.
He added that the anti-CAA protests are being 'carefully steered' so that they do not hamper the ongoing board examinations.
There were talks on floating a new political force after the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was passed in Parliament. Popular singer Zubeen Garg had sought Aasu's help to launch a party for the protection of the indigenous identity of the people in the wake of the enactment of CAA.
