Ludhiana: Upping the ante against the Ludhiana STF in-charge for allegedly manhandling a city-based lawyer on February 25, advocates on Thursday blocked roads outside the Mini Secretariat for six hours. Demanding action against inspector Harbans Singh, lawyers had gone on an indefinite strike, call for which was given by the District Bar Association (DBA), on Wednesday.
Advocate Varun Gupta, in his complaint to AIG, STF, Ludhiana-Ferozepur range, and Ludhiana police commissioner, had accused Harbans of thrashing him and maltreating his father near Doraha when they were returning from Delhi on Tuesday morning. He had alleged that the STF in-charge had even threatened to implicate him in a false case.
On Thursday, the advocates reached the Mini Secretariat chowk and staged a protest from 11am to 5pm, blocking both sides of the road. The protest caused a major traffic jam on the stretch and affected adjoining areas, including Ghumar Mandi, Pakhowal Road, Kochar Market, the most. The traffic police made diversions to ensure smooth traffic flow.
Amid all this, Varun Gupta fell unconscious and had to be taken to a hospital.
Varun, who was discharged from the hospital later, said, “We had lodged a complaint to police commissioner Rakesh Agarwal, DCP Pradeep Agarwal and Khanna SSP Harpreet Singh on the day of the incident. But till now, no action has been taken against the inspector. I want not just an FIR against the inspector, but his dismissal from the service too. I will fight till the end to get justice.”
“On Wednesday, we had met AIG-STF Snehdeep Sharma and also given a complaint to the SHO concerned in Khanna, but so far nobody has called the cop or us for investigation,” he added.
Varun alleged, “We have tracked several complainants whose family members had been falsely implicated in NDPS cases on the instructions of inspector Harbans. As they are struggling to get justice, they joined us in the protest today against the cop.”
Advocate Kushagar Kashyap said, “We have called a state-level protest on Friday. Advocates from all Bar associations will come to the city and stage a protest outside Mini Secretariat from 10am to 5pm.”
Kashyap claimed, “We have also come to know that Harbans has amassed huge property. It is also a matter of investigation. Besides, even if police lodge an FIR against him, we will fight all cases in which he has implicated innocent people.”
The members of Bar association also met Khanna SSP Harpreet Singh who had initiated a probe in the matter. Similarly, DC had marked an inquiry to SDM Payal.
The SSP said, “A complaint has been received against inspector Harbans Singh and police are probing the case.”
An official, requesting anonymity, said, “The police will also probe if the STF had informed the police station concerned before taking action in their jurisdiction.”
