Shoddy medians prompt HMRL to rebuild them

The HMRL is rebuilding the medians with bigger pipelines to ensure water drains out
SECUNDERABAD: The shoddy repair work by the Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) while constructing central medians at Punjagutta has prompted the Metro officials to rebuild the medians to avoid the stretch from getting waterlogged during rains. The HMRL is rebuilding the medians with bigger pipelines to ensure water drains out.
Experts said that before executing a project, a digital survey has to be conducted to understand the contours. “While constructing a median, the problems that can be faced during a natural disaster have to be taken into account,” said Structural Engineers World Congress-India vice-president and infrastructure expert Dr SP Anchuri.
Addressing concerns, the HMRL said that the taxpayers’ money is not being utilised to rebuild the medians. “The advertisers who had put up ads at the medians have outsourced the job to contractors. The HMRL has come up with a good solution to the problem,” NVS Reddy, managing director, HMRL told TOI.
According to Reddy, in the earlier medians, the outlets which allow the water to flow towards the corner of the road during rains were smaller in diameter and this may cause waterlogging. The HMRL officials added that a ground verification found that the slope is uneven, which restricts water from flowing into manholes located towards the corner of the road. “I will speak to the GHMC commissioner and ask him to ensure that the water seamlessly flows into the manholes,” he said.
Meanwhile, the GHMC engineers admitted that several roads in the city were being damaged due to waterlogging.
“Even the best quality bitumen can be destroyed due to stagnant water,” said a GHMC engineer.
