DMK MLA passes away in Chennai, party loses two legislators in two days

CHENNAI: DMK MLA S Kathavarayan died on Friday. He was 58. Doctors attending him at a private hospital in Chennai said he had recently undergone a bypass surgery. He subsequently suffered renal failure.
On Thursday, Tiruvottiyur DMK MLA KPP Samy passed away at his residence in Chennai after prolonged illness.
Kathavarayan had won from the Gudiyatham constituency in Vellore district in the 2019 bye-elections defeating AIADMK candidate R Moorthy. The bye-election was held after 18 AIADMK MLAs were disqualified by assembly speaker P Dhanapal. Kathavarayan secured 52% of the votes polled in the byepolls while Moorthy got 38%.
With the death of two of its MLAs, the DMK’s strength in the state assembly has come down to 98.
Katharavarayan started his political career as a student wing member of the DMK and had participated in the anti-Hindi protests in the 1960s. Since then, he has held several posts in the party.
