HYDERABAD: Junior colleges across the state are set to be
tobacco free zones as the Telangana State Board of Intermediate Education (TSBIE) has directed all the district intermediate educational officers and principals to conduct
tobacco control drive.
Colleges have been directed to display ‘no smoking’ sign boards in the campus and conduct half-day sensitisation programme on tobacco control laws. “Declare educational institutions free from tobacco, cigarette and other tobacco products through enforcement and reporting of cigarette and other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003,” read the circular issued by the TSBIE.
As per Section 6 and 6 (b) of COTPA, tobacco sale to and by minors is banned and there is prohibition on sale of tobacco products within 100 yards of educational institutions. Mandatory signage should be displayed near the main gate.
