Number of polling stations in corporation limit up by 29

Coimbatore: The number of polling stations in the corporation limit has been increased by 29 to 1,245 from 1,216, according to the draft list of polling stations released by corporation commissioner J Sravan Kumar in the city on Wednesday.
Since the district collector had released the voters list two weeks ago, as per the directions of the state election commission, the corporation has been working on to prepare the polling station list based on the newly released voters list.
Following special camps conducted to add or remove voters at the polling stations in the district for about a month, the new list added 36,000 voters, totaling 14.85 lakh voters – 7.44 lakh men, 7.4 lakh women and 203 under the other category.
Each polling station will have a maximum of up to 1,400 voters. The stations will be equipped with basic amenities, including drinking water, sanitation, ramps and lights, the commissioner said.
The new list reflects some changes suggested by the public, he said, adding that a meeting would be held at the district collectorate on Monday with representatives from political parties to elicit their suggestions on the new list.
