The death toll in the violence in northeast Delhi rose to 20 on Wednesday, injuring at least 250 people, many of whom have complained. Most of the victims, including the head constable, were shot dead. The violence began on Sunday, in which a group of men is roaming with rods and poles in parts of north-east Delhi in the national capital, they have also destroyed houses and shops owned by Muslims. The Delhi Police remained mostly mute spectators while mob rioted and attacked people.

Earlier in the day, the Delhi High Court issued a notice to the Commissioner of Delhi Police, seeking response on the same day to action against those who incited violence in the national capital till 12.30 pm. A bench of Justices S Muralidhar and Talwant Singh said that the police should not wait for court orders, and take action on their own to control the situation.

The High Court is hearing a plea against three BJP leaders - Anurag Thakur, Parvesh Sahib Singh, and Kapil Mishra - for filing an FIR and making inflammatory statements against those opposing the citizenship law. Riots and mob attacks erupted within 24 hours of Mishra's statements against anti-CAA protesters.

On Tuesday, 67 companies of police and paramilitary forces were deployed in the affected areas to bring the situation under control. According to police, around 20 people have been detained for violence. Shoot-on-vision orders have been issued.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal wrote a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah asking that the army be brought in to control the "dangerous" situation. He said that Delhi Police, "despite all efforts", is "unable to control the situation".
