Bihar Police gets country's first tribal women battalion

The recruitment of first batch was made in May 2018 and its first raising day was celebrated on July 13, 2018
PATNA: The country's first tribal women police battalion came into active service after the successful passing out parade on Wednesday. The battalion is named Bihar Police Swabhiman Vahini.
The women constables were confidently holding rifles in front of senior IPS officers at Mithilesh Stadium in the state capital.
Most of the 199 recruits belong to Tharu tribe. At present, the battalion would be temporarily stationed at BMP-5 until its own station gets completed at Valmikinagar in West Champaran.
The recruits had undergone training for police duty for several months at the BMP-2 headquarters at Dehri-on-Sone in Rohtas and were stationed at BMP-5 for last five months. The programme coincided with the ongoing Bihar Police Week celebration, which is to end on Thursday.
Make department proud, DGP tells tribal women cops
Parade commander Karuna Hansdah told TOI that they all had undergone rigorous training.
The women constables cheered when BMP DG SK Singhal announced five days of privilege leave for all of them after the passing out parade.
DGP Gupteshwar Pandey, who was the chief guest of the programme, encouraged them to maintain discipline and make the police department proud of them.
ADG (headquarters) Jitendra Kumar also heaped praises on the women constables. He told TOI that the total sanctioned strength of the battalion is of 675 constables. "Requisition to Central Selection Board of Constables has been already sent for making fresh recruitments in the battalion," he said, adding that this battalion is first of its kind in the country. It will have eight platoons.
