PUNE: A caller posing as an army colonel duped a restaurant owner of Rs 72,000 on the pretext of ordering food for 40 of his men and then acquiring the details of the restaurateur’s debit card, including one-time password, to pay for the order online on Sunday.
“The caller sought the OTP under the garb of security code that, he claimed, was required for an army software to make online payments,” inspector Ashok Shelke of the Haveli police said.
Restaurant owner Manish Tukaram Kadu (30) of Gorhe village on Sinhagad-Panshet Road lodged a complaint with the Haveli police on Monday. According to the FIR, Kadu’s father was at the restaurant when he received a call from an unknownnumber on Sunday morning.
The caller, who introduced himself as an army colonel, told Kadu’s father that there was an army camp in Panshet and he required 40 ‘vegetarian meals’ for his men in the evening.
In the evening, Kadu’s father received another call from the same person, who promised to pay for the order online. He then asked Kadu’s father to share his son’s phone number with him, the police said.
Later, the conman called Kadu to seek his bank account and debit card details. Kadu shared his debit card details, including the CVV number. “The caller then told him that he would receive a security code on his cellphone. However, Kadu received an OTP, which he shared with the conman,” the officer said.
Soon after Kadu shared the OTP, the suspect transferred Rs72,000 from his bank account. “The preliminary investigation has traced the phone numbers and the account to Jamtara in Jharkhand,” Shelke said,
