JALANDHAR: Shiromani Akali Dal, one of the oldest allies of the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party at the Centre, said on Wednesday that it does not want a repeat of 1984 in Delhi and sought strong action against trouble makers “irrespective of their religious or political affiliation.”
SAD Rajya Sabha MP Naresh Gujral, speaking to TOI on phone from Delhi, said: “We don’t want to see a repeat of 1984 in Delhi and very strong action should be taken against all those elements who have fomented trouble irrespective of the party or religious affiliation.”
Gujral also said the
riots in Delhi have dented the image of the country, especially when US President Donald Trump was visiting the capital city.
“The trouble makers should be suppressed very quickly with a heavy hand. The riots have already dented the image of the country,” he argued and held that Delhi police should have been proactive in controlling the situation. “Most important thing is that police should not be seen by one community as being partisan,” he added.
The SAD MP also hailed the decision of Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee and other gurdwaras to offer shelter and food to the victims of the riots. “It is tradition of the Sikhs to stand by the oppressed and Sikhs have been following it despite all odds. Entire country should be proud of this tradition of the Sikhs. I feel proud of our Sikh brothers,” said Gujral, who plays an important part in handling national affairs of the Shiromani Akali Dal, which largely represents Sikhs.
He also held that teachings of the Sikh Gurus of universal brotherhood, compassion, tolerance, co-existence and to helping those in trouble were now more relevant for the country than all times.
Gujral said the idea of India was standing on four pillars — democracy, diversity, secularism and federalism. “The moment you weaken one pillar, the whole edifice starts collapsing,” he added.
