BENGALURU: The long-pending third coaching terminal of the city will be commissioned at
Byappanahalli only by May, Union minister of state for railways
Suresh Angadi said on Thursday.
Work on the TCTB (third coaching terminal Byappanahalli), which began in 2013, has missed several deadlines: December 2018, March 2019, July 2019, January 2020 and March 2020.
Angadi said TCTB will be commissioned in May with passenger facilities. “Initially, 32 pairs of trains from both KSR Bengaluru and
Yeshwantpur will be shifted to TCTB. The earlier deadline was March 2020, but some work is still pending. A mere inauguration of the terminal, without any passenger facilities, won’t suffice,” he said.
Earlier, chief minister BS Yediyurappa and Angadi flagged off 06221/06222 Shivamogga-Chennai-Shivamogga Tatkal Express after increasing its frequency from weekly to bi-weekly through video link from Bengaluru.
Asked about the status of Bengaluru suburban rail project, Angadi said the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approval will be obtained soon.
Responding to a query on the Centre’s delay in approving a second terminal at Yeshwantpur, Angadi said all work related to Karnataka is being taken up on a priority. “I have also communicated to the CM to allocate adequate land to execute projects without any delay. He also promised to allocate adequate amount for the suburban rail project in the budget,” he added.
Ajay Kumar Singh, general manager, SWR, said tender for Cantonment suburban terminal has been called and work will begin after the commissioning of TCTB. “We will take up the second terminal at Yeshwantpur in the next phase,” he said.
Coaching terminals are where trains originate/terminate their trips. With the existing coaching terminals at KSR Bengaluru City and Yeshwantpur having reached their capacity, the new terminal at Byappanahalli would have eased congestion.
The terminal on 20 acres will have seven new platforms, five stabling lines, two run-through-lines, three pit lines and one shunting neck. The proposed terminal is located 2-3km from Byappanahalli railway station.
Every day, about 150 trains depart from the City railway station and 100 from Yeshwantpur. While KSR Bengaluru City railway station has 10 platforms, the Yeshwantpur station has six. Officials say they could introduce services to and from states like
Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and
Tamil Nadu from Byappanahalli to reduce congestion at the existing terminals.
