Man from Odisha marries minor, impregnates her

Coimbatore: Police are on the lookout for a 20-year-old migrant labour who raped and impregnated a 15-year-old girl near Kariyampalayam on the outskirts of the city. The girl gave birth to a boy baby on Wednesday.
According to the Thudiyalur all-woman police, Bibek Das, a native of Odissa, befriended the minor girl at a private spinning mill, where both of them were working. “They were working in the spinning mill for the past four years. They were in a relationship and Das had “married” the girl with the consent of her parents in February 2019,” said an investigation officer.
It is to be noted that the marriage has no legal standing as the girl in this case is a minor.
The issue, however, came to light only when the girl, who was nine-month pregnant, visited Mettupalayam government hospital on Sunday (February 23). As the girl’s health condition was not satisfactory, doctors there referred her to the Coimbatore Medical Hospital College and Hospital (CMCH) for advanced medical care.
Based on the information provided by the CMCH authorities, the Thudiyalur all-woman police registered a case under Section 5(i) r/w 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offence (Pocso) Act and Section 9 of the Child Marriage Act on Tuesday.
“The migrant labour had left for his native place on February 17 and his mobile phone has been switched off since then. Further investigation is on,” the officer said.
Meanwhile, the girl delivered a boy baby at the Kavundampalayam Public Health Centre (PHC) on Wednesday. It was a normal delivery. As it was a case of preterm and the infant was found to be underweight, it was shifted to the newborn intensive care unit at CMCH. The condition of the girl is stable.
