An innocent taxi driver needed 19 stitches in his arm after he was attacked and robbed by a group of masked thugs with an axe.

Ravinder Singh was set upon by four men in Queen's Park, Perth, after they got out of a silver sedan and approached his cab about 3.40am on Saturday.  

One of Mr Singh's attackers was armed with an axe, which was used to smash the car windows and hit the taxi driver.

Mr Singh is understood to have sustained his injuries from the glass splinters of the shattered car windows. 

The gang of men stole cash before fleeing the scene in the sedan they arrived in.

Mr Singh told SBS Punjabi he 'screamed for help' once escaping and arriving at his house.

'As soon as I parked the car, I shouted for help: ''Please save me'',' he said. 

'My wife and a couple who stays with us immediately came out and were shocked to see me wounded and my clothes drenched in blood.' 

The taxi driver was treated at Royal Perth Hospital.

He said the car also suffered a flat tyre as he hit the kerb while being chased by the men.  

Reliving the attack, Mr Singh said he was 'terrified'.

'My first instinct was to save my life. I could not see their faces as they were covered,' he said.

Mr Singh said at least $180 was stolen and the thieves also took his phone and another one a customer had accidentally left in the cab.  

The taxi driver no longer feels safe behind the wheel and is thinking about changing his career.
