Bundi administration to urge Rajasthan government to revamp old river bridges

The bridge where the incident took place had no railing to prevent the bus from falling off it
JAIPUR: Bundi district administration will write to the state government regarding the dismal condition of the bridges on rivers in the state. In the Bundi accident, where the bus lost control and fell into the river, the bridge had no horizontal component to prevent the vehicle from falling off it. The bridge only had small cement pillars, which barely served any purpose.
Antar Singh Nehra, district collector, Bundi said, “The bridge from which the bus fell into the river had vertical component but no horizontal ones which could prevent the vehicle from falling into the water body. The bus broke past the pillar which was completely shattered. The bridge was constructed nearly 40 years ago and since then, has been in the same condition.”
According to officials, there are many such bridges not just in Bundi but across the state which could also lead to similar incidents. “We have found that there are other bridges in the district which also have similar pillars and are dangerous. We will also look at the original plans of the bridges as to how they were planned with the pillars but no complete boundary,” added the collector.
According to the officials, the bridge was constructed by RIDCO many decades back and the collector added, “At present, no action can be taken against anyone as RIDCO had made this bridge years ago. Nowadays, they do not do this kind of construction, but we will try to get the original plans from them.”
Seeing the severity of the accident, which could have been prevented if there was a higher boundary wall, the official said, “We will be writing to the state government requesting them to ask the concerned department to review such bridges and possibly take some measures so that they can be upgraded so that such accidents can be prevented in future.”
