CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president
K S Alagiri on Thursday condemned the
midnight transfer of
Delhi high court judge Justice S Muralidhar for voicing his views against violence in Delhi and questioning the inaction of police.
In a statement, Alagiri said the move was a systemic threat to the functioning of independent institutions.
"Already, such independent institutions, backed by the Indian Constitution, including the judiciary, the Election Commission and the RBI, have come under immense pressure under this Narendra Modi - Amit Shah government. The midnight transfer of the judge clearly indicates the sad state of affairs," he said.
Alagiri recalled the questions raised by Justice Muralidhar on the inaction of the Delhi police, including failure to book BJP leaders who had made provocative speeches that eventually led to the violence. "As Congress president Sonia Gandhi has demanded, Union home minister Amit Shah should immediately resign," Alagiri said.
