AHMEDABAD: With a clear focus on local body polls scheduled in November this year the state government has made a number of budget provisions for improving quality of life in towns and cities. After smart cities, for instance, the state government is now encouraging the concept of ‘smart towns’, which are mainly nagarpalikas.
The government has announced a new competition for encouraging such towns with a provision of Rs 100 crore. Five winning towns will be provided Rs 20 crore each.

Besides this, there has been no new announcements this year for urban areas. The urban development department has made a provision of Rs 4,544 crore to boost basic infrastructure in cities and nagarpalikas under the Swarnim Jayanti Mukhya Mantri Shaheri Vikas Yojana.
A big portion of this budget, Rs 1,169 crore will be spent to spruce up underground civic facilities — drainage, storm water drains — while Rs 500 crore has been allocated for municipal water networks. To improve traffic management in cities, Rs 200 crore has been provisioned for de-congesting railway crossings, and another Rs 500 crore for bridges and flyovers.
