‘These characters…’: Trump doesn’t hold back against Democratic rivalsIn
Donald Trump’s press conference, the overwhelming majority of questions thrown at him were related to US domestic politics. Trump responded to most of the major news-making developments in the US, from roundly chastising judges Sonia Sotomayor and
Ruth Ginsberg to accusing the Clintons and
Michelle Obama of hobnobbing with movie mogul
Harvey Weinstein, who has just been convicted on sexual assault charges. And Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer came in for criticism for demanding more money to tackle
coronavirus. “He criticised it, said it should be more and if I give more, he will say it should be less… these characters, they are just not good for our country. That’s all they can do. They’re not getting anything done.” Trump also defended firing Joseph Maguire and appointing Richard Grennell as his new director of national intelligence, saying Maguire was required by law to go in March.
CNN vs Trump: Fake news fightWhile Trump’s contentious relationship with certain news organisations is well known, not many expected the sparring to continue in India. In his press conference, he refused to take a question from CNN anchor
Jim Acosta, causing a back-and-forth between the two, with the president accusing the network of airing fake news. This led Acosta to comment: “Mr President, I think our record on delivering the truth is a lot better than yours.” Trump replied, “Let me tell you about your record, your record is so bad you ought to be ashamed of yourself. You have the worst record in the history of broadcasting.”
Planting trees… kind ofTrump and First Lady
Melania Trump’s Rajghat trip also included planting a tree… that already exists. The duo was seen shovelling dirt into a hole around a small tree, much to the amusement of some netizens. A video of it is populated with comments about how it should be called “putting soil around a tree” or asking how one can plant an already planted tree. While many Twitter users quipped that it looked like a money tree, arguing that it was rather fitting, a plaque at Rajghat described it as the ‘Pachira Aquatica’, a tropical wetland tree.
#TrumpPleaseMeetGaneshA video of an autistic American Indian boy, who considers Trump his hero and wants to meet him, went viral. The hashtag was a top trend in India last evening, with tweeple asking POTUS to meet the boy, Ganesh Srinivasan, when he returns to the US. “DT, you are awesome,” the kid can be seen saying in the video. His parents, Raghu and Terri Srinivasan, talk about his treatment and progress. “This boy’s love for @realDonaldTrump is so heartwarming! Really hope he gets to meet the man himself!!” a user commented on the video.
Taking a beatingNot everyone was excited about the president’s visit. Victims of the Bhopal gas tragedy made an effigy of Trump and beat it with brooms. The protestors at Iqbal Maidan in the Madhya Pradesh capital argued that the American government was protecting Dow Chemicals, which acquired
Union Carbide in 2001.
