He completed his B.Com from DAV College, Kanpur under Kanpur University and LLB from DAV Law College. He passed the UPSC Civil Services Exam for the third time.

However, they did not go on to serve in the government as they could only secure an allied service and had no place in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS).

What did Kovind do after graduation?

Kovind became a lawyer after clearing the IAS. He has been practicing law ever since. He became the counsel for the Central Government in the Delhi High Court from 1977 to 1979 and served as the Union Government's advocate in the Supreme Court from 1980 to 1993.

In 1978, he became a lawyer-on-record of the Supreme Court of India. He practiced in Delhi High Court and Supreme Court for nearly 16 years till 1993. He was also nominated as a lawyer in the Bar Council of Delhi in 1971.

As a social service, he provided free legal aid to the weaker sections, women and the poor under the Free Legal Assistance Society in New Delhi.

He later became a personal assistant to the Prime Minister of India, Morarji Desai in 1977–1978. He joined BJP in 1991. He became president of the BJP Dalit Morcha and the All India Koli Samaj between 1998 and 2002. He also served as the party's national spokesperson.

He served as a Rajya Sabha MP from the state of Uttar Pradesh in April 1994 and served for two consecutive terms (12 years). He was the chairman of the Rajya Sabha House Committee.

As a Member of Parliament, he visited Thailand, Nepal, Pakistan, Singapore, Germany, Switzerland, France, the United Kingdom and the United States on study trips.

On 8 August 2015, he was appointed as the Governor of Bihar by the then President of India. On 20 July 2017, he became the President of India, winning against Meira Kumar.
