WESTPORT — Police are searching for an “armed and dangerous” suspect who authorities say robbed a store clerk at gunpoint Tuesday night, police said.

A clerk at Westport Market, 291 American Legion Highway, called police at 10:12 p.m. reporting that he was outside the store when a man pointed a gun at him and threatened to kill him if he didn’t “give him what he wanted,” according to Sgt. Christopher Dunn, a Westport Police Department spokesman.

The suspect, described by police as a light-skinned man about 5 feet, 10 inches tall, stole cash, a cell phone and other items from the clerk, then ran away headed west on American Legion Highway, Dunn said in a statement.

He wore baggy blue jeans, a dark hoodie, dark baseball hat that had small white emblems on the front and back, as well as black gloves.

Anyone who spots a person resembling the suspect should not approach him and should instead call the police, Dunn said.

“We strongly urge citizens to not approach an individual they think may match the description as he is considered armed and dangerous,” Dunn said.

During the robbery, the suspect covered his face with what appeared on surveillance footage released by authorities to be an item of clothing or fabric.

Anyone with information about the suspect should contact detectives of the Westport Police at 508-636-1122.
