KOLKATA: The Lalbazar brass has issued a slew of instructions to its men on the ground in the wake of clashes and violence in Delhi. Nabanna, too, has asked all districts to be vigilant to avoid any skirmish between anti- and pro-CAA protesters.
“In the backdrop of clashes reported from Delhi since Monday, all DCs, ACs and OCs are requested to stay alert. Regular patrolling in respective areas, gathering of intelligence and remaining in touch with the community leaders is required. Please take necessary action accordingly,” one such message from the administration and police brass read.
The social media cell, though, has been categorically asked to stay in touch with local police and nip all rumours in the bud. Residents have been asked to call up the control room to share any relevant information linked with the any manifestation of anger. “While protests are taking place in the city as well as several districts, none has disrupted everyday life even for a day,” said an IPS officer.
Earlier, police commissioner Anuj Sharma had expressed satisfaction to his officers saying not even one major incident was reported in the city after the Citizenship Amendment Act protests broke out across the country. Lalbazar thanked its officers who kept in constant touch with the community, managed the scheduled political marches with confidence and ensured there was enough police mobilisation on the ground. However, Sharma has asked his men not to be complacent but carry on with the good work.
Sources said that the vigil will be continued till Holi. Community meetings, like the one arranged for residents of Entally and Beniapukur a couple of months ago, will also continue. “Let us assure all Kolkata citizens that no incident of violence has been reported in the city so far. We are maintaining strict vigil and the citizens are coming forward and helping us,” said an IPS officer.
Police said they have made special arrangements for smooth traffic flow despite several protests lined up against the Delhi violence.
