Tata Motors could be preparing a more powerful variant of the Altroz as a test mule equipped with the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine has been spotted testing. How do we know that? Well, the vehicle identification number (VIN) on the front windshield states ‘X451 1.2 VGTC BSVI’ where the VGTC could stand for variable geometry turbocharger. It must be mentioned that the Altroz Geneva Edition displayed at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show featured a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine, too.
While Tata is yet to reveal technical specifications of the Altroz turbo-petrol, we expect its numbers to be similar to that of the Altroz Geneva Edition. The Altroz Geneva Edition’s powertrain developed 102PS of power and 140Nm of torque. Although it was shown with a 5-speed manual transmission at the show, Tata could also pair this engine with a dual-clutch automatic transmission.
Could the introduction of a more powerful variant of the Altroz result in a sportier variant? We hope so as the hot hatchback segment is on a steady decline. Currently, the only hot hatchbacks available in the country are the Volkswagen Polo GT TSI and the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Turbo.
The Tata Altroz turbo-petrol is expected to hit showrooms by the end of 2020. We expect it to be priced above the top-spec petrol variant of the Altroz, which retails at Rs 7.69 lakh (ex-showroom). When launched, the Altroz turbo-petrol is expected to be positioned between the Grand i10 Nios Turbo and Volkswagen Polo GT TSI.
