COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore city police have arrested a 32-year-old
auto driver for verbally abusing a special sub-inspector (
SSI) of police when the latter asked him not to indulge in drunken driving.
The accused has been identified as M Ranjith alias Ganesh of Edayar Street.
Bazaar police station special sub-inspector R Nagarajan and a few other police personnel were involved in vehicle check in Pavizham Street in the early hours of Tuesday. They stopped the auto that was driven by the accused as it did not have number plates.
“The officials realised that the auto driver was under the influence of alcohol. He was asked to take a breathing test. The test showed that he was drunk. The officials imposed a penalty on him and asked him not to drive the vehicle in a drunken condition,” an official said.
The accused, who had already argued with the SSI, started to verbally abuse them. He warned to kill the SSI and drove away in his auto.
Based on a complaint from Nagarajan, the Bazaar police registered a case under sections 294 (b) (reciting obscene words), 353 (prevents a public servant from executing his duty) and 506 (i) (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and arrested Ranjith. He was remanded in judicial custody.
It is the second such case recorded in the district this week. The Valparai police arrested V Prabhu, 33, on Sunday for assaulting a police official who registered a case against him.
